Creative Performances

Joyce King/JKing Dance Company(JK/JKDC), based in Brooklyn, NY, is a professional gender female company founded by King to amalgamate multiple dance forms (ballet, jazz, and modern), with human behavior to arouse diverse perspectives and awaken a shift in our aesthetic values and emotional influences. It addresses preconceived ideas and delicate topics (e.g., mental illness, bullying, gender bias, self-perception) through the art of storytelling - some metaphoric, some literal, creating a richly textured and emotional landscape of interdisciplinary art.

Additionally, it offers artistic outlets for young emerging dancers and the creative aging to develop work, rehearse, and share the stage with JK/JKDC in performance. It is passionate about creating works that stimulate self-discovery and comprehension of life complexities in their simplest form, provoking audiences to explore territories of the mind and heart. It believes dance is a way to generate cultural bridges, a catalyst to release fears, encourage joy, and open dialogue on events that shake our social and personal world.

'The works in "UnWrapped" are provocative, emotional and daring'.
                                                                                                                                                           - Marilynn Larkin / Explore Dance

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you........ As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

From the movie, “Coach Carter”, (which was co-written by John Gaitins and Mark Schwahn) in response to “What is your biggest fear?”  The original passage can be found in its entirety written by Mariann Williamson.

'King has given the little girls inside us a chance to scream without uttering a sound,
beautiful, breathtakingly beautiful.'
 ~ Maria Gentile, NYC  Singer/Songwriter

'Most people know me as an actress, but the truth of it is that I started off as a dancer, so my heart is always first and foremost in the dance world. The most powerful women are up there and it’s just an empowering dance company for women. The choreography is so fluid, so great, so special.’ -Ilene Kristen, Actress, ABC’s ‘General Hospital’, ‘One Life to Live’, ‘Ryan’s Hope
